How to Build Strong Proof for a Genuine Spousal Sponsorship Relationship

When preparing a spousal sponsorship application, proving that the relationship is genuine is one of the most important parts of the file. IRCC requires that a sponsored spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner be in a real relationship, not one created mainly to obtain permanent residence.

The type of proof that works best depends on the kind of relationship being claimed. For married spouses, the marriage must be legally valid and recognized both where it took place and in Canada. For common-law partners, IRCC requires at least 12 consecutive months of living together in a marriage-like relationship. For conjugal partners, the relationship must generally have existed for at least 12 months, with serious barriers preventing marriage or cohabitation, and the sponsored person must live outside Canada.

For couples who are living together, IRCC’s document checklist asks for at least two types of cohabitation evidence. This can include joint property ownership, a shared lease, joint utility or bank records, vehicle insurance showing the same residence, government-issued documents showing the same address, or other records linking both partners to the same home.

If the couple is not living together at the time of application, the evidence usually needs to show the history and continuity of the relationship in a different way. IRCC’s checklist points to records of communication, proof of visits, and explanations where visits did not take place. For common-law partners, proof of prior cohabitation is also central.

A strong application is usually not built on one document alone. It is built on a pattern. Financial interdependence, communication history, travel records, family recognition, photos from different periods, and consistent personal timelines can all work together to show that the relationship has depth, continuity, and public legitimacy. IRCC’s forms and checklist specifically ask applicants to submit relationship evidence relevant to their situation, including context for photographs and explanations where documents are missing.

Applicants should also be prepared for the possibility of an interview. IRCC may request one if officers want clarification about the relationship or the details in the application. In those cases, consistent answers, truthful explanations, and organized supporting documents can make a major difference.
